Job Opportunity: Surgical Services - Certified OB Surgical Tech

Location: Clinton, Maryland
Facility: MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital (MedStar Health System)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Start Dates: 6/16, 6/30


Position Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years as a Certified OB Surgical Tech
  • Certifications Required:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or ARC certified
    • CST (Certified Surgical Technologist)
  • Additional Certifications (may be required based on unit):
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) for RN/LPNs in ED or Pediatrics
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) - C-EFM required for Labor & Delivery candidates (AWHONN acceptable as placeholder)
    • Tech Cert Verification (National) based on profession/state
    • HIPAA Safety Manual Acknowledgement (annual)
    • State License verification prior to start
    • NIH Stroke Certification (for MS/Tele and ICU units)

Surgical Case Types

  • C-sections
  • Tubal ligations
  • D&Cs (Dilation and Curettage)
  • Cerclage removal
  • Hysterectomy

Work Environment

  • Daily average surgical case volume: 1-3 cases
  • Number of ORs: 2
  • Scrubs provided
  • 36-hour shifts, day and night

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

  • Background Check: Criminal background check within 90 days, including multi-state and federal checks
  • Employment History: Minimum 2 years experience verified, including at least one travel or per diem assignment
  • References: Two positive supervisory references supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
  • Work History: Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps
  • Education Verification: Highest degree as required by position
  • Drug Screen: Within 90 days of start, includes multiple substances (excluding marijuana)
  • Physical Exam: Annual physical confirming ability to perform job without accommodations and free from communicable disease
  • Immunizations and Health Requirements:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (annual updates)
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years (recommended for exposure to children/infants)
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer
    • Hepatitis B - Titer, series, or signed declination
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination (required during flu season)
    • COVID-19 vaccination (required; medical/religious exemptions subject to strict approval)
  • Fit Mask (N95) Test: Within 9 months of start, updated annually (client may complete onsite)
  • Competency Exams: Medication test, color blindness, dysrhythmia/EKG (if applicable), and general competency exams required within 3 years of start, with passing scores

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Completion of MedStar Health facility modules (SITELS) prior to start
  • Photo for badge with specific guidelines (clear, centered, no glare, solid background)
  • Various attestations including drug screen, background check, I9/E-Verify, and ADA support training

Notes

  • Unit accepts first-time travelers
  • Valid driver's license required if driving is an essential job function
  • Monthly ongoing checks for EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG compliance
