Registered Nurse - Stepdown/PCU

Location: Springfield Memorial Hospital, Springfield, Illinois

Position Details

  • Specialty: Stepdown/PCU Registered Nurse
  • Employment Type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 day shifts (06:45 - 19:15), flexible to accommodate 4x12 if preferred
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in relevant setting (first-timers not accepted)
  • License: Must have an active Illinois RN license (no pending licenses accepted)
  • On-call: No
  • Floating: May float within scope as needed
  • Guaranteed Hours: Subject to client call-offs up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA (RQI acceptable)
  • NIH Certification
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not required

Work Setting Experience

  • Telemetry
  • Neuro Stepdown
  • PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units

Cardiac Monitoring & Emergency Response

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Telemetry monitoring on unit
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams

Cardiovascular Skills

  • Post Cardiac Angiogram, MI, Cardiac Cath (pre/post), Cardiac Surgery (pre/post)
  • Sheath removal, TR Band management

Gastrointestinal

  • Feeding tube care and management

Renal/Genitourinary

  • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
  • Renal failure care

IV Therapy/Phlebotomy

  • Accessing ports, arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • Phlebotomy, peripheral line care
  • Starting IVs

Medication Management

  • Heparin protocols
  • Manage cardiac and vasoactive drips (no titration)
  • PCA and procedural sedation administration
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips

Neurological/Psychiatric

  • Craniotomy, CVA, pre/post neurosurgery
  • Spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury

Orthopedics

  • Ortho trauma, peripheral nerve block catheters
  • Total joint replacements

Plastic Surgery

  • Skin grafts, surgical drains

Respiratory

  • Care of ventilated patients
  • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
  • External CPAP/BIPAP
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
  • Interpretation of ABGs
  • Nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, portable oxygen tanks
  • Non-invasive airway management
  • Tracheostomy management

Professional Skills

  • Isolation precautions
  • Wound care and wound vac management

Preferred Experience

  • Cerner electronic health record system
  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Level I trauma center experience

Dress Code & Charting

  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • Charting system: Cerner

Documentation & Certifications

  • Valid US Driver’s License or State ID
  • ACLS, BLS, PALS certifications (AHA accepted)
  • HIPAA Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • State RN License verification (primary source)
  • NURSYS verification
  • Competency exam (clinical/allied candidates)
  • Badge photo (color, plain background)
  • Signed Code of Conduct
  • Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption (required Oct 1 - Apr 1)
  • Physical exam within 1 year, including labs
  • Fit mask test (3M masks accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • TB questionnaire (annual)
  • Immunizations or titers for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Background check within 30 days covering 7 years of history
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM checks within 30 days
  • References (2 professional for travel/allied/acute care)
  • Skills checklist
  • Fingerprinting for Illinois healthcare registry (if no IL license)
  • Education verification (degree/transcript)
  • Illinois-specific criminal and offender searches within 30 days
