Requirements

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of unit experience
• Certifications Required:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
• Driver's License: Required at submission to determine eligibility based on the 50-mile radius rule.
• Exam: RN's must pass a skills exam during orientation (open book, 90% required to pass).

Unit Information

• Department: PCU
• Bed Capacity: 40 beds with an average daily census of 24
• Patient Ratios: 1:4-5 (both days and nights)
• Common Diagnoses:

  • Adults with cardiac med/surg issues
  • Dialysis
  • Cancer diagnosis
  • Vascular issues
  • Sepsis
  • Adult respiratory conditions
  • Stroke
  • Post-stent and post-pacer placement
  • Renal failure
• Titration: RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Insulin).

Staffing and Support

• Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; does take an assignment.
• Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, with a ratio of 1:12.
• Respiratory Equipment: RNs are required to troubleshoot high flow equipment.
• Tele/Monitor Techs: RNs must read and interpret their own strips.

Scheduling and Flexibility

• Weekend Requirements: Every third weekend.
• Holiday Requirements: Rotating with permanent staff.
• Floating Requirements: Yes, to MedSurg or ICU for PCU acuity patients.
• Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs.
• Orientation: 1 week of unit/department-specific orientation.

• Focus on patient experience scores, responsiveness, and communication about medications.
• Looking for candidates who are flexible, willing to learn, and can take feedback.
• The unit serves diverse cultural populations, primarily Hispanic and Somalian.
• RTO (Request Time Off): Must be submitted upfront (7 or fewer days per 13-week contract). Additional RTO will not be approved after submission.
